Shim Laam (Fly Dance) Shim Laam is a Rongmei folk dance. It is believed that this dance which imitates the graceful movements of the fly originated from Amhang Jourumei ceremony. For the Jourumei ceremony, Amhang invites all creatures on earth. Each of these species performed its dance in the Jourumei ceremony and the Rongmei ancestors learnt dances from them. Shim means fly in Rongmei dialect. Therefore, the name of the dance is Shim Laam(Fly dance). This choreography imitating the movement of the fly is performed by unmarried youth (both male and female) in equal numbers. This dance is performed during various festivals and also in rituals like Ballumei. A particular song is sung for performing this dance which is accompanied by traditional musical instruments.
