Gadaba is an important tribe of Odisha. They are mainly found in Lamtaput, Similiguda, Potangi and Khairiput Block of Koraput district. Their livelihood is based on shifting and settled cultivation along with the collection of Minor Forest Produce. Gadaba tribe organize dance programs during social occasions, marriage ceremony, rituals, festivals, and leisure time. Among various dances of Gadaba, Dhemsa is the most spectacular dance performed at the time of Pusparab, Chaitparab, and marriage ceremonies. Gadaba women decorate themselves with their traditional costumes, wear famous Kereng sarees and perform the dance with melodious songs. While women dance in semi-circle with steps of three and four, often bending their body forward, showing skillful movement on heels, the men standing in the center only play musical instruments like drums, flutes, Tamaka, Mahuri, trumpets, etc. The dance starts with a holy chorus of Hulahuli. The trumpet blowers play a significant role in the dance.
