The Koya community found in the Malkangiri district of Odisha performs dance followed by songs during different rites, rituals, festivals, and social occasions, as well as in leisure time. This dance occupies a special place in their main festival, Bijapandu. The Koya perform the dance by adorning traditional costumes and playing musical instruments, like a drum, bell fitted sticks and Jhumuka. Both male and female perform the dance together.
The specialty of the dance is that the drummers use the special headgears made of bison horns with Kawri hanging from the headgear. The tribe hang upon their necks large drums.
