Bihu is one of the folk dances of Assam is performed during the harvest season for the appeasement of the mother goddess. Bohag Bihu or Rangoli Bihu, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu, Kongali Bihu or Kati Bihu are celebrated in the spring, winter, and autumn seasons respectively. The dance is characterized by brisk dance steps which include twirls, squats, and bends with rapid movement of the hips, arms, and wrists. The females follow stricter lines or circles during the dance. There are no jumps in the dances.
Both males and females dance together, with the accompaniment of traditional music, wearing traditional colorful costumes . The musical instruments used during the dance are Dhol, Taal, Pepa, Toka, Baanhi, Xutuli, and Gogona.
