Meaning Significance
Holi dance is also called Gher dance among Garasia tribes. Holi is celebrated by the people of Dungri Garasia tribe of Banaskantha taluka. This dance has been linked to religious belief of celebration of holi. Generally Garasia tribe dances every year during the day of Holi festival as they dance with belief for well-being of one's family, healthy life, good progress in one's business, keeping this in mind that Holi is celebrated with pure religious spirit. To celebrate Holi, people dance along with worshiping it. In this dance, men and women in particular dress up in their traditional attire and dance with the jawaras sorghum grown five days before Holi on their heads in hand basket. Men play dhol drum, women play lazim jingling cymbals and dancing in their traditional steps chala revolving around in a circle dance. In this dance, various types of dancers dance wearing wooden mhoras mask of their traditional deities to complete ritual worship.
In the Holi dance, men and women of the Garasia tribe dance with different types of steps chala. Usually these steps are of different types, and are performed with different actions. There are total 19 types of step chalas in this Holi dance of Garasia caste and these 19 types of chalas steps are performed by them with full of joy and therefore this dance lasts for about five to seven hours. But especially according to the time circumstances and the convenience of the dancers there is no time restriction. But the actors continue to dance with great vigor, passion, till they feel the vigour, strength and exhaustion.
Performance Context
Holi is celebrated in the Garasia tribe from Phagan Sud Pancham to Poonam full moon i.e. Holi day. Generally during this period people celebrate Holi with joy and gaiety by performing this dance. This dance is performed with the faith of social, cultural and especially religious belief. Every year people perform this dance to pray to their traditional gods and goddesses, especially Holika Mata, with the feeling that there will be no pain, suffering in their family and the whole year will go well. Basically this dance has less cultural significance but more spiritual significance. So people perform this dance for 10 days during the Holi period. Thus, starting from the Poonam before Holi i.e. Phagan sud Poonam, Holi is celebrated during the day of Holi i.e. for 1 month. In which people dance with traditional drums and instruments every night in their respective villages, families at predefined places to celebrate holi. But from Phagan Sud pancham the fifth day of Holi i.e. for 10 days celebrates Holi by special singing and dancing. Generally, the Mobhis head of each family keep a votive regarding the spiritual beliefs and perform this dance keeping in mind that to completely fulfilled votive offerings. That is, Holi dance is socio-culturally and spiritually very important among the Garasia tribes.
Along with celebration holi festival, this dance popular among the Garasia tribes is also performed on their weddings, fairs and all auspicious occasions. The wedding season in tribal areas usually starts with the festival of Holi. Thus, this dance has a dual role. This dance is equally important for the celebration of the festival of Holi as well as on wedding occasions. In the Garasia tribes, wedding ceremonies wedding celebrations last for five to seven days. Their marriages are celebrated for five days for the bride and seven days for the groom or according to the time and circumstances and the financial situation of the family. People perform this dance for four to five hours during weddings, especially at night. Family and relatives join in this dance. Traditionally, an invitation is not required to join the dance. People of the family, people of the village together at night to perform this dance. Along with that, fairs and auspicious events in the tribal area are coming continuously throughout the year. This dance is also performed on such occasions. Performed by men and women, the dancers in traditional colourful costumes enjoy the dance and the spectators also get a chance to enjoy the dance. In short, Garasia tribes perform this dance on all auspicious occasions including Holi festivals, weddings, and fairs.
