Meaning/Significance-
One of the largest tribal communities in central India, in Maharashtra, the Gond tribe is settled in the eastern districts namely Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Nagpur.
Khapari is a dance form performed in East Vidarbha in the State of Maharashtra. Especially done in Nagpur district. This dance is performed by Gond and Pardhan tribe community.
Performance Context-
Khapri dance is performed during the celebration of Gond tribe deity Kutash Bhivasan who is called Banal Pen in Gondi dialect. This dance is performed in the month of Chaitra. Everyone participates in this dance from children to adults. During the Khapri dance, a burning khapri is held in the hand. The people of Gond and Pardhan tribes of the tribal community offer sacrifices along with this khapri dance to please their deity.
Costumes and Jewellery-
Women participate by wearing Lugda, Dupatta while men wear Dhoti.
Music and Instruments-
Dhol, Shehnai, Changli are used for Khapri dance.
