Meaning/Significance-
One of the largest tribal communities in central India, in Maharashtra, the Gond tribe is settled in the eastern districts namely Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Nagpur.
The fortnight before Diwali is when the Gonds take on the role of Ghusadi or deities. They paint their bodies and faces and wear peacock hats to participate in the Ghusadi Dhemsa dance. The Ghusadi Dhemsa dance and its associated rituals are unique to the Gonds settled along the borders of Maharashtra and Telangana.
Performance Context-
Yatmasura Pen is worshiped in these villages in the fortnight before Diwali. The Gonds are nature worshipers and the community regards Yatmasura as the remover of obstacles. The Dhemsa dance, can be performed on any occasion, be it a festival, wedding or evening entertainment. However, in the fortnight before Diwali, the Ghusadi dancers only don their characteristic costumes to appease the deities. Therefore, the Dhemsa dance performed on this occasion is called Ghusadi Dhemsa.
The night preceding Diwali, beginning with the full moon, Ghusadi Dhemsa dance every night till Diwali. Ghusadi dancers and village men often go to neighboring settlements to dance. The young boys of the village take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their dancing skills
The Dhemsa dance, can take place on any occasion, be it a festival, wedding or simply for entertainment in the evenings.
Costumes and Jewellery-
The men paint their bodies and faces and wear peacock hats to participate in the Ghusadi Dhemsa dance.
Music and Instruments-
The men and women of the village join in the Ghusadi dance to the rhythm of traditional instruments such as shehnai, dhol and nagada.
