Vattakali is an old musical dance form of the Kurumba tribes. The work vattam means circle, kali means dance or game or play and vattakali means a circular dance.Vatakali and Kolkali are some of the traditional dance forms of Mullu Kurumbas where Vatakali is performed during the marriage rituals and Kolkali is performed during temple rituals.
The Vattakali dance is performed by the Kurumba tribe on marriage occasions. The relatives of the bride and groom performs this dance before marriage while the bride and the groom perform it after marriage. The dance is performed again at the bridegroom's house once the bride reaches there with the bridegroom.
Kolkali dance is performed for marriage celebration and ucharal festival. Kolkali is a highly rhythmic folk art performed in the pandalur taluk of Nilgiri district of TamilNadu and north malabar region of kerala.
