One of the tribes residing in the Nilgiris since time immemorial is the Kotas. The Kota Tribe is excellent artisans they excel in pottery making and terracotta Craft. Kotas women are the only members of the all tribe allowed to practice the craft of pottery. Pottery making among the Kotas is a collective enterprise in which both men and women participate. Shaping of the pots and padding on the wheel is done entirely by the women. They bring the products shine to the surface, giving the pots better texture and longevity.Kotas make all household pottery, daily vessels, oil lamps, clay smoking pipes also, metal and leather goods and carpentry products. Now a days women make small statues of elephant, house ,lord Ganesh statue, face model of men as well women. Decorative items are also made.
