About type of art
These paintings look more like village scenes and showcase their tribal culture. In most of the paintings, there is a hut or a tree in the center and all the activities and actions are happening around the tree. Kurumba art is a unique tribal art form found in the Nilgiris. Four colours are used traditionally Red (Semm manna) and white (Bodhi manna) are soils, black is obtained from the bark of a tree (Kari maran) and green from the leaves of a plant(Kaatavarai sedi). Krumbar excels in the art of painting. In ancient times, paintings were drawn on the rocks. Even today, their paintings can be seen on the rocks in Karikaiyur village. They collect the milk of the red sandal wood (vengai) tree which is available naturally for painting. Sufficient amount of water is added to the collected milk and brown and black colours are collected and green colour is collected from the juice of Kattakidai leaves.
